Key Findings
The global fluid catalytic cracking market is poised to grow at a healthy CAGR of 3.6% during 2016-2022. Various reasons for growth of fluid catalytic cracking market are improving fuel standards, growing demand for “clean” fuel and increasing operational efficiency.
Fluid catalytic cracking is an important conversion process that is undertaken in refineries. It is like a secondary unit operation that basically helps in the production of additional gasoline in the petroleum refining process. The process converts high-molecular weight hydrocarbon fractions of petroleum into more valuable olefinic gases, gasoline, diesel and other products. It converts feedstock with high boiling point and vaporizes and breaks chain of long hydrocarbon liquid molecules into smaller molecules at high temperature and moderate pressure. FCC processes have replaced thermal catalytic processes and the products formed at the end have higher gasoline quantities with greater octane rating, and thus, they face stringent carbon emission standards.
Fluid catalytic cracking market is expected to report growth in the forecast period due to huge economic growth in various countries like China, India, Mongolia, Laos and Cambodia. Exponential growth has led to issues about decreasing petroleum resources. There is a marked increase in the industrial and transportation sectors which creates a huge demand for gasoline. Rapid growth in transportation hence results in high demand for petroleum.
There has been an increase in globalization and international trade practices which has led to a quick fall in resources. Various governments worldwide are investing in petroleum refining activities to meet increasing demand and are also updating and upgrading current equipment. There are plans to construct new refineries and to increase refining capacity of existing refineries. There is a regional imbalance in terms of petroleum supply and this will expand refinery operations all over the globe. All these will lead to increase in fluid catalytic cracking processes and provides a big boost to market growth.
Factors that restrain the market growth are high cost for investment and operating refineries. Feedstock composition for refineries acts as a market restraint as there are issues with contamination of feedstock and heat and configuration balance.
FCC units are categorized on this basis of arrangement of generator and reactor which are integral components of the FCC unit. There are two types of FCCs, side-by-side type and stacked-type. In side-by-side type FCCs, the reactor and generator are placed in separate vessels. In stacked-type FCCs, same vessels house both the generator and the reactor. The generator is placed below the main reactor. Catalysts used in FCC play a huge part in the whole cracking process. Unit design and operation is dependent on catalyst properties. Essential features of a catalyst are large pore size, compatibility with high temperature and action and low coke production.
Market Segment Insights
On the basis of technological configuration, the global fluid catalytic cracking market is segmented into side-by-side type and stacked-type.
Regional Insights
Market regions that are covered in the report are North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa and South and Central America. APAC has the largest market share of the fluid catalytic cracking market and is followed by North America. Highest growth in the forecast period is expected in Asia Pacific region, specifically in China, India, Indonesia, Singapore and others due to increasing demand for fuel for transportation.
Manufacturing base has shifted from Western countries to the APAC region due to low labor cost and cheaper raw material supply. In this region availability of bio-products is very less; hence there will be growth in the FCC market.
It is expected that there will be a decrease in FCC demand in Europe and North America due to slow decline in fossil fuel demand. These are industry-saturated markets which focus on green and sustainable and renewable resources.
Middle East, Africa and Central and South America will report high demand for gasoline in the forecast period. There will be increasing need for gasoline from countries like UAE and Brazil.
Competitive Insights
The major market players for fluid catalytic cracking units are Flour Corporation, Chevron Lummus Global, Axens, Shell Global solutions, UOP, Exxonmobil, and CB&I Company. Companies that are involved in production of catalyst are Albemarle Corporation, W.R. Grace Company, and BASF SE. Another growth opportunity for market players is the growing backward integration of FCC manufacturers in order to reduce overall ownership costs.
