Lyocell is a manmade fiber obtained from bleached wood pulp. Lyocell is also recognized by the name of Tencel in the United States. The strong fabric properties of Lyocell enhances it utilization for industrial purposes such as ropes, bandages, abrasive materials and automotive fillers. Lyocell fibers are differentiated from its counterparts owing to its high crystallinity, high degree of orientation, long crystallites, and well-oriented amorphous regions which leads to formation of a textile with high tensile strength. Lyocell finds major applications in textile industry such as in women clothing, home textiles such as bed sheets, drapes and curtains. Lyocell fiber, also known as third generation cellulose fiber has further gained traction owing to its rising demand as a substitute for rayon fiber in textile and other end-use industry. As a low tinted fabric, lyocell finds emerging applications such as in surface preparation in aerospace industry. Lyocell also finds multiple advantages in the medical field such as in the production of surgical products and medical equipment.
The market is witnessing significant demand as lyocell fibers are environment friendly biodegradable fibers. The fabrics made from Lyocell can be easily disposed of by process such as sewage deposition, incineration and landfilling. The manufacturing of Lyocell incorporates the use of non-toxic solvents such as amine oxide which leads to the environment friendly production of lyocell fibers. The growing pressure on synthetic fiber manufacturers for the production of cellulosic man-made fibers in order to discourage the use of petrochemical fibers has further motivated industry players to invest in research and development (R&D) activities for technological advancements. There is a recent trend of focusing on the acceptance of lyocell as a raw material for non-woven products. For instance, industry players such as Lenzing (Inventor of TENCEL), through its research and development activities on fibers, has optimized the absorption tendency in lyocell fiber products. Further, Lenzing has significantly reduced the use of preservatives in cosmetic products such as facial wipes and lotions. Also, the non-toxicity of these fibers makes it ideal for adult incontinence products, feminine hygiene products as lyocell doesn’t interacts with the medicated tissues. Moreover, the strong adsorbent, antibacterial and wet strength of the fiber in comparison with conventional cotton fiber increases its use in baby diapers and surgical materials (such as coats for doctors). Rising awareness towards the use of sterilized products is expected to drive the market growth. However, the rising cost-of lyocell fiber owing to fluctuating price of wood pulp in comparison to its counterparts such as linen, rayon, etc. forces apparel manufacturers to use substitute products. In addition, lack of finance, skilled labor, undeveloped sales channel majorly in developing economies is bound to impact the market in a negative way.
In 2016, Asia-Pacific, dominated the market growth due to massive growth of population majorly in countries such as China and India. Increasing penetration of baby diapers due to high birth rates concern towards pediatric hygiene and expanding non-woven market is primarily driving the market growth in this region. Presence of few key players in North America and Europe which are widely manufacturing “TENCEL” by using little measure of water and chemicals is poised to surge the market growth.
Some of the key players operating in the market include Lenzing AG, Chon Bang Company Limited, Aditya Birla Group, Smart Fiber AG, Qingdao Textiles Group Fiber Technology Co., Ltd., Weiqiao Textile Company Limited, China Populus Textile Ltd., Akzo Nobel and Acelon Chemicals & Fiber Corporation.
On the basis of its product, the global lyocell fiber market is categorized into following segments:
In 2016, staple fiber product dominated the market and is also expected to maintain its dominance throughout the forecast period. Staple fiber is wrinkle-free, lightweight and is considered ideal for manufacturing clothes which easily withstand variant climatic conditions. Staple fibers are witnessing demand owing to its increasing applications in apparels such as casual wear, denims, chinos, towels, etc. The market for long staple fibers is projected to grow rapidly due to its increasing applications in the manufacturing of heavy-use fabrics such as blankets, rugs and coats. Additionally, growing demand for house hold related products such as carpets is another significant factor for increased demand of staple fibers. Increasing applications of staple fibers in the production of delicate yarns which is then used for production of light-weighted garments is another factor augmenting the market growth.
Cross-linked fibers exhibit major market potential and is projected to rise in the coming years. However, these fibers lead to abrasion in wet state which results in the formation of micro fibrils on the surface of fiber. Thus, abrasion resistance of fiber is improved by the application of cross-linking agents on textile substrates. For example, aniline-s-triazine, used a cross-linking agent to enhance the abrasion resistance of these fibers. Therefore, these fibers are used for limited applications such as improving the silkier texture and is also utilized in production of jersey fabric, woven fabric, and knitwear.
On the basis of its applications, the global lyocell fiber market is categorized into following segments:
In 2016, apparel application dominated the market and is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period owing to rising demand for better quality apparel across the globe. Wrinkle resistance, high absorbency and suitability for machine wash makes this fiber an ideal alternative to other cellulosic fibers such as cotton and rayon. Moreover, growth of textile industry has further triggered the market growth as it attracts investment across the globe. There is increased demand for lyocell fiber from the manufacture of apparel products, such as designer clothes, headgears, head caps, etc. Lyocell is also gaining market traction due to its rising demand in high end designer apparels available in malls and boutiques. Now-a-days, lyocell is blended with nylon which makes it comfortable as nylon prevents the cloth surface from wind and water and provides warmth and comfort from inner surface. In addition, blends of lyocell with nylon and linen pose lucrative opportunities for market players owing to its growing demand in summer, spring and fall fashions.
Baby diapers segment is growing at the fastest CAGR owing to its rapid adoption in countries with high birth rate. Baby diapers made up of smooth fiber of lyocell absorbs 50 percent of the moisture and provides natural hygienic condition. This is one of the major factor supplementing the segment market growth.
Based on geography, the global lyocell fiber market is segmented into following regions and countries:-
Asia-Pacific dominated the market in 2016 and is projected to maintain its dominance in the years to come. Growing awareness regarding pediatric sanitation, decline in infant mortality rate and increasing purchasing power capacity of consumers are among the major factors driving the demand for baby diapers in this region. Therefore, leading to the growth of Asia-Pacific lyocell fiber market. The increasing market penetration for fashion garments has further led to lifestyle improvements which is projected to boost the consumption of lyocell fiber in this region. Expanding construction industry is another significant factor driving the need for home textiles products such as carpets, curtains and drapes in this region. North America is expected to witness average growth with the rise in apparel exports due to presence of established textile industries in this region.
Lyocell is a man-made fiber, however, it is produced from natural raw materials such as wood pulp. Therefore, the environmentalist approach of countries such as UK, U.S. and France has further driven demand for biodegradable fibers. Europe, Latin America and Middle East are predicted to reflect average growth rate as lyocell here is being converted to sewing threads for small specialized applications, which restricts its demand in large garment manufacturing sector resulting in moderate growth of the market.
