Manganese occurs as a silvery metallic element with an atomic number 25 and a chemical symbol of Mn. Manganese is not a natural element but is found in various minerals such as purpurite, manganite and rhodonite among others. Manganese is very hard metallic element but brittle in nature. Manganese in its pure state is available in four allotropic forms. The alpha form of manganese is stable at ordinary temperatures. Manganese is indispensable to plant growth and allows the assimilation of nitrates in algae and green plants. Most of the manganese is used in the form of silicomanganese and ferromanganese alloys for the production of steel and iron. Iron oxide based manganese ores are reduced in electric or blast furnaces with carbon to produce ferromanganese which is then used in the manufacture of steel. Manganese is crucial for the production of iron and steel due to its excellent deoxidizing, sulfur fixing and alloying properties.
